Understanding Page Workflow Stages
Pages pass through several stages on the way to being submitted:
- Edited: Pages in initial design work (editing by staff)
- Proof: Pages ready for adviser and editor review
- Preflight: Pages being checked for print quality issues
- Pre-Submit: Pages approved and ready for plant submission
- Submitted: Pages sent to the plant for printing
Permission restrictions become tighter at each stage: advisers and editors can make changes in Proof, only advisers can make changes in Preflight and beyond.
The Preflight Stage
When pages enter Preflight status, the Preflight panel automatically opens in Page Design. Here you should:
- Review any preflight warnings (text crossing gutter, image resolution, etc.)
- Decide if each warning needs to be fixed or if it’s intentional by design
- Resolve warnings as needed
- Leave warnings if they are acceptable to you (resolved warnings will remain in the list)
- Generate a PDF for final review. You can generate a high-resolution PDF from the File menu or the Export menu in the Book module.
Moving Pages to Pre-Submit
Once preflight checks are complete:
- Select the pages in the Book module that are ready to move to Pre-Submit
- You can select multiple pages at once if they’re all in the same status
- Click the Pre-Submit button to advance the pages
- A confirmation dialog will appear asking you to verify that you’ve checked preflight alerts and reviewed all PDFs
- Check the confirmation box and proceed
Pages are now in Pre-Submit status—the final stop before submission.
Submitting Pages to the Plant
You can submit pages individually or as a group.
How to submit multiple pages at once:
- In the Book module, filter the ladder to show only “Pre-Submit” status pages
- When filtered by Pre-Submit, an “Express Submit” button appears at the top
- Click Express Submit to send all pre-submit pages to the plant at once
- A final confirmation screen shows the pages you’re about to submit
- Click Submit to transfer the pages to the plant
After Submission
Once submitted, pages will show a “Submitted” status in the Ladder and can no longer be edited. The pages have been transferred to the plant for production.
💡 TIP: Use the ladder filters to organize your workflow by submission status or deadline.
