Preflight is a built-in proofing tool that checks pages for potential printing issues. Reviewing preflight checks before submission helps catch potential problems.
Launching Preflight
Open any page in Page Design and go to File > Show Preflight Check. eDesign scans your pages and displays a list of alerts, separated by left page and right page issues. Preflight alerts draw attention to potential problems so you can decide how best to resolve them. All alerts may not require action.
Understanding Common Alerts
- Text Across Gutter alerts warn when text frames cross the center gutter where the book binds.
- Images Below Minimum Resolution flags photos that don’t meet the 250 PPI minimum for print quality.
- Bleed Object warnings indicates an items does not fully extend to the edge of the page.
- Placeholder Text (Lorem Ipsum) alerts point out placeholder text on the page.
- Overset Text highlights text frames that may be cutting off text.
Resolving Preflight Issues
Click an alert to select the problem object on your page. Most issues are straightforward to fix (e.g., move text frames away from the gutter, scale images to required resolution, extend bleeding images, replace placeholder text, or enlarge text frames).
Final Preflight Before Submission
Run a final preflight check on all pages before submission. While you can submit pages with unresolved alerts, addressing them improves print quality and reduces unexpected issues.
💡 TIP: Use the PDF preview to check image quality at print size. Zoom to 300% in the PDF viewer to see if images below the minimum PPI still look acceptable to your eye.
