Portrait flow is the process where eDesign automatically places your portraits on pages with custom formatting, sizing, and data organization. Learn how to set up portrait flows with control over layout, spacing, text placement, and more.
Getting Started with Portrait Flow
From the book module, select the page where you want the portrait section to begin. Then click Edit > Portrait Flow. Create a new portrait group by clicking the New Flow button and enter a name for the group (for example, “Freshman”).
Selecting Your Data
Choose whether to flow placeholders or actual portraits. If flowing actual portraits, select whether to filter by grade or teacher. You can select multiple groups, and the portraits will be sorted alphabetically. Use the search field to filter a long list quickly.
Configuring Portrait Settings
The portrait flow wizard offers four control areas: Layout, Frames, Text, and Spacing and Margins.
- Set the start page and portrait size in picas
- Choose frame shape (square, rounded, or oval)
- Select a character style for text and the data you want to flow
- Configure spacing between portraits
- Preview changes in the preview area on the right
Advanced Layout Control
Click on individual portrait boxes in the preview to deactivate them (e.g., to make room for a headline, candids or additional page coverage). Right-click to deactivate entire rows or columns at once. You can apply a single page’s settings to all left-hand pages, all right-hand pages, or all pages in the flow once you have one page set how you want.
💡 TIP: Be confident in your layout settings before deactivating portrait frames. Changes to layout may require you to repeat the deactivation process.
Completing the Flow
When you’re ready, click Flow Portraits, confirm your settings, and click Flow Portraits again. The process completes and returns you to the book module where you can see your new portrait pages.
